Chief Justice
Chief Justice :- Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud is sworn in as the 50th Chief Justice of India today. He was administered the oath of office by President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Justice Chandrachud will serve as the head of the Supreme Court for two years — till November 10, 2024.
He succeeds Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, who was at the top post for a short tenure of 74 days.
On May 13, 2016, Justice Chandrachud was appointed to the Supreme Court as a judge.
He has participated in numerous Constitutional benches and historic rulings, such as those concerning the right to privacy and the Ayodhya land dispute.
He was also a member of the benches that rendered significant rulings on the constitutionality of the Aadhaar programme, the Sabarimala problem, and the decriminalisation of same-sex relationships by partially invalidating Section 377 of the IPC.
A Justice Chandrachud-led panel issued a number of measures to ease the suffering caused by the Covid crisis.
More recently, a bench he presided over broadened the definition of “unmarried woman” in the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act.
The late Justice YV Chandrachud, who held the position of Chief Justice of India for seven years, was the country’s longest-serving Chief Justice.
Justice Chandrachud is his son.
It is interesting to note that Justice Chandrachud has twice reversed decisions made by Justice YV Chandrachud, who would make history as the first Chief Justice whose father was also one.
Justice Chandrachud graduated from St. Stephen’s College with a bachelor’s in economics.
Later, he earned an LLB from Delhi University, an LLM from Harvard Law School in the US, and a doctorate.
In addition to teaching comparative constitutional law as a visiting professor at the University of Mumbai, he has practised law in the Supreme Court and the Bombay High Court.
In June 1998, the Bombay High Court gave him the title of senior advocate; the following year, he was appointed Additional Solicitor General and served in that capacity until being appointed a judge.
Previously, Justice Chandrachud held the positions of Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and judge in the Bombay High Court.
